Bold Missy Brewery - in-store display animation

A collaboration to bring to life the beautifully illustrated labels for various flavors of the Bold Missy Brand. The labels are applied on the can or bottle with a flavor profile for an in-store vertical display.

The Task

For this collaboration, I had the great pleasure of working with Julia Forgarty. We were both very excited to be able to utilize our strengths for such an amazing company, as Bold Missy Brewery. My illustration, 2D rigging, and animation; with Julia's 3D modeling and animation; plus both of our design skills.

Even though the brewery did close just as pandemic struck, there is the possibility of bring it back. These animations would help to bring awareness to the brand when relaunch occurs. In speaking with the owner, Carol Waggoner, there is a secondary challenge to make the label animations also be able to work in a way that could be used as chapter titles for an eBook version of her upcoming book.

The Deliverables

  • Two beer animations 1080x1920 with music sting and/or SFX

The Process

The Research

Since all these illustrations, done by Don Jones, were inspired by bold and adventurous woman, who had been through the hero's journey, we wanted to carry that feeling into the animations. We did some research into Sally Ride and Amelia Earhart, to learn about when they were living and who they were. We decided on sound design that matched the era they were living in. I also researched references for the plane's engine animation and the rocket's afterburn.

First Pass

It was a lot of fun getting to rebuild the label in photoshop. The biggest challenge I faced was to match the illustrator's style. The other challenge was figuring out the best way to prep the image for all animation later.

Second Pass

Continuing the process with Rocket Ride, the challenge I faced was getting the background as close the original illustration as I could. Below is a video of most of the process work for this pass.

Later I updated the type animation for both and updated the engine artwork and animation for Solo Flight.

Final Pass

Coming into the final stretch, the main focus was cleaning up all the nuances and adding all the final details. I really love how I painted the eyes so that I could get the ladies to blink and really bring them to life.

The biggest challenge was smoothing out the write on title for Solo Flight. it just took longer than I had expected to rebuild each layer so that it would paint on as nicely as it does.

After that was done and sent off to my partner, Julia, I also did a sample proof of concept for using the label animations for the future book on Artvive. It will have to be revisited so the software recognizes the labels separately, but currently ready for eBook.
